OUR CLUB

OUR HISTORY

In September 1898, 35 distinguished citizens of Wester Chester, PA, met at the home of Miss Margaret Walter, where they agreed to organize the West Chester Golf & Country Club. In 1899, the Club leased the Darlington farm, south of the Borough. The property had at least one tennis court, an original clubhouse located at 839 South Church Avenue, and a nine hole course that was 2700 yards long.

In August 1906, Lowndes Taylor agreed to lease the Club a 55 acre plot. The new site, which remains today’s current site, was north of Ashbridge Street, between High and New streets, partly in West Chester and partly in West Goshen township. In March 1907, work began on the building of a new clubhouse, the links and tennis courts. The formal opening of the Club and grounds took place in December 1907. In 1909, two bowling alleys were added, as well as, more tennis courts and three new greens and sand “pits.”

The Club suffered a setback the morning of January 23, 1911, when an intense fire destroyed the Clubhouse. Members decided that the Clubhouse must be rebuilt as it was such a pivotal focus of town social life. The new Clubhouse was built on the same site and opened December 9, 1911.

Throughout the years, there have been many improvements to the grounds, Clubhouse, tennis and pool facilities. While the Club has evolved over the years, we have remained a member-owned club that strives to provide the finest country club experience in the region. The West Chester Golf and Country Club has witnessed continued growth for over a century, thanks to all the members, past and present, who have contributed their time, talents, and leadership to build the Club into what it is today.
